SMS Marketing in Bangladesh: A Practical Campaign Guide
Build SMS campaigns customers expect and can act on. Learn how to plan your audience, message, timing, budget and measurement, with practical Bangladesh examples.

Good SMS marketing in Bangladesh starts with a permission-based customer list, a relevant offer, a recognizable sender and a clear next step. Check the permitted language, sending hours and approval requirements for your route, count the final SMS segments, and measure customer actions rather than assuming delivery means a sale.

Imagine a shop preparing a seasonal offer. The owner has a spreadsheet of phone numbers, a discount and a deadline. Sending the same message to everyone is easy. Deciding who should receive it, how they can stop future offers and what will count as success takes a little more thought.

That preparation is where a useful campaign begins. This guide turns SMS marketing into a repeatable process for Bangladesh businesses, from an opted-in audience to the next campaign decision.

Start with one customer action

Ordinary SMS does not require the recipient to install your app or have mobile data enabled to receive the text. A web link inside it still needs an internet connection to open. Delivery also depends on the number, handset, network and messaging route; a contact in your spreadsheet is not a guaranteed reader.

SMS can suit a shop announcing a relevant offer, a restaurant promoting a bookable meal, an ecommerce store sharing a delivery deadline or a service business inviting a customer back. Choose one action before writing: visit a product page, reserve a table, use a coupon or contact your team.

Keep promotional and service messages distinct. A requested OTP or an essential order update has a different purpose from a sale announcement. Do not add an unrelated promotion to an OTP or assume a transaction gives unlimited permission to advertise. For verification workflows, see DianaHost’s OTP SMS service guide.

Build a list of people who expect to hear from you

Ask clearly whether someone wants SMS offers when they sign up, check out or register at your counter. Explain which business will send them and what kind of messages to expect. Keep a record of the permission, its source and date, together with any preferences. A phone number supplied for delivery is not, by itself, a clear request for promotions.

Avoid purchased or scraped lists. You cannot assume that a third-party list represents permission for your business. As an example of a provider policy, Twilio’s messaging policy requires appropriate consent and a way to withdraw it. That policy is not a statement of Bangladesh law; confirm the requirements of the provider and route you actually use.

Clean the list before importing it

Remove duplicates and exclude unsubscribed contacts. Store phone numbers as text in a spreadsheet so leading zeroes are preserved. Normalize them to the format your gateway accepts. Check a small import first and confirm that names, phone numbers and groups map to the intended fields.

Excel or CSV support, file-size limits and field mappings vary by platform. Confirm the accepted format with DianaHost before preparing a large upload. Keep a separate record of contacts who must not receive promotions, and apply it again before every campaign.

Group contacts by useful, known preferences

Practical audience groups for a relevant campaign
Group Useful message Check first
Customers in a delivery area An offer available in that area Current delivery coverage and address data
Customers interested in a product category A relevant restock or collection Recorded interest and promotional permission
Repeat buyers A genuine loyalty benefit Eligibility and whether they already redeemed it
Customers who requested a stock alert The specific item becoming available The original request and actual stock

Use information customers knowingly shared. Avoid guessing personal circumstances from a purchase. Before a reminder, remove people who already completed the campaign’s action when your records allow it.

Make the sender recognizable and the opt-out usable

A masking sender ID displays an approved brand name instead of a numeric sender. DianaHost’s bulk SMS service page lists masking, non-masking and OTP options. Ask which sender type, registration documents, character rules and routes fit your campaign before preparing the launch.

Alphanumeric sender IDs are commonly limited to 11 characters, but supported names and registration rules vary. More importantly, they are generally one-way: customers cannot simply reply to that brand name. Twilio’s alphanumeric sender documentation explains the one-way behavior.

Only write “Reply STOP” if the route actually accepts and processes replies. Otherwise provide a tested alternative, such as a short preference-page link or a staffed contact method. Make the request easy, record it promptly and exclude that number from later promotions across your lists. Do not promise automatic suppression unless the system has been verified to do it.

Operator Do Not Disturb services should not replace your own opt-out process. For example, Grameenphone’s DND information describes stopping its own promotional messages and distinguishes promotions from other senders. Check your provider’s current filtering and campaign requirements as a separate step.

Write one offer that makes sense in a notification

A useful starting formula is brand + relevant benefit + real deadline or condition + one action. Lead with the information the customer needs. Replace “Amazing news for our valued customers!” with the actual item, availability or benefit.

  • Be specific. Say which products qualify and whether a minimum order applies.
  • Use genuine deadlines. Do not renew a “last chance” message every day or imply stock is scarce without checking.
  • Choose one main action. A product link and a separate opt-out can serve different purposes; three competing sales links usually make the message harder to follow.
  • Personalize only when it helps. A relevant branch or product can be more useful than inserting a first name. Check missing-name fallbacks and the length of expanded fields.

The landing page should match the SMS offer, load clearly on a phone and explain any conditions that do not fit in the text. Test the destination and checkout before sending. Use a short, recognizable URL where possible; avoid adding a customer’s phone number or other personal data to tracking parameters.

Check language requirements before optimizing SMS length

For local promotional campaigns, language is more than a creative choice. BTRC’s published Bangla-SMS guidance, with content dated 8 February 2022, describes directions for mobile operators to provide promotional SMS and campaigns in Bangla. Confirm the current requirements applicable to your sender, content and route with DianaHost.

Where a language choice is permitted, use the one your audience can understand quickly. Banglish spelling can be ambiguous, and English is not automatically the right choice because more basic Latin characters fit in one SMS. A greeting for Eid or Pohela Boishakh should sound natural to its recipients.

Typical SMS capacities for budgeting
Encoding Single segment Each segment in a multipart message
GSM-7 160 units 153 units
Unicode, including Bangla 70 units 67 units

These are encoding units, not necessarily visible letters. Some GSM-7 symbols consume two units, and an emoji or unsupported punctuation can change an otherwise GSM-7 message to Unicode. Count the final copy, including links, opt-out details, names and any automatic signature. See our Bangla SMS character-limit guide for worked examples and source documentation.

Where billing is per segment, estimate total billable segments × the applicable segment rate, then include other charges. For illustration, if 1,500 recipients receive one segment and 500 receive two, the campaign uses 2,500 segments. At rate R, its base message charge is 2,500 × R. This is a calculation example, not a DianaHost price quote.

Do not remove a necessary condition or opt-out simply to reach one segment. A clear message that costs two segments may be the appropriate choice; know the cost before sending.

Plan approvals, timing and frequency together

Ask which sender registration and content approvals your campaign needs, how long review normally takes, and whether edits require another review. Approval processes can differ by route and message type. Submit final text early enough to fix problems before your offer begins, especially during busy seasonal periods.

Confirm the permitted promotional sending hours in Bangladesh time with your provider. Then choose a suitable time within that window. For a meal offer, leave enough time to order; for an event, leave enough time to book. Avoid intrusive hours and consider customers’ routines during Ramadan. Do not treat a generic “best time” as a rule for every audience, or assume OTP and transactional routes have no restrictions.

If scheduling is available, verify the account’s timezone and the scheduled job after saving. If you send through an API or another application, test its scheduling behavior as well. A successful schedule entry is not a delivery receipt.

There is no useful universal campaign frequency. Set expectations when people subscribe, coordinate messages across your teams and send when there is a relevant reason. Around a sale, a teaser, launch notice and reminder are possible stages—not a requirement to send all three to every contact.

Plan Bangladesh seasonal campaigns around real customer needs

Seasonal ideas with practical checks
Occasion Useful angle Before sending
Eid-ul-Fitr or Eid-ul-Adha Early shopping, a real delivery cut-off or a thoughtful greeting Confirm dates, stock, courier cut-offs and approval lead time
Pohela Boishakh A new collection, seasonal menu or loyalty benefit Review Bangla wording, eligibility and availability
National and cultural occasions A respectful, relevant greeting or service notice Consider the occasion’s meaning before attaching a sales pitch
11.11, 12.12, year-end or Black Friday-style sales A specific offer and, where useful, one deadline reminder Check real discounts, capacity, permitted hours and audience overlap

For Eid, prepare the sequence before the busiest days rather than writing everything just before launch. For a final-hours reminder, the offer’s deadline does not override the permitted sending window. Exclude customers who already bought when you can, and avoid sending the same promotion repeatedly in a day.

SMS campaign workflow: choose your audience, send one clear offer and measure the outcome.
A repeatable campaign connects audience selection, clear communication and measured outcomes.

Measure the outcome, then improve one thing

Before launch, decide how you will recognize the desired action: a campaign-specific coupon, a tagged website visit, a booking record or a call recorded by your team. Keep the measurement period consistent when comparing campaigns.

Delivery is not an open, a read or a purchase. Ordinary SMS does not provide standard read receipts. Delivery status depends on the gateway and downstream reporting. Twilio’s message-status documentation distinguishes SMS delivery tracking from read events available on supported channels.

For website campaigns, Google Analytics campaign parameters can identify traffic from a tagged link. A consistent scheme might use utm_source=customer_list, utm_medium=sms and a descriptive campaign name. Check that any short-link redirect preserves the tags. Link visits and analytics sessions can differ, and forwarded links or later purchases can complicate attribution.

A small campaign scorecard
Measure Calculation or record What it tells you
Reported delivery rate Delivered messages ÷ submitted messages Route/list performance within the provider’s reporting definitions
Unique click-through rate Unique tracked clickers ÷ delivered messages Response to the link, using a stated denominator
Attributed orders or bookings Recorded actions within your chosen window Observed business outcomes, with attribution limits
Cost per attributed action Total campaign cost ÷ attributed actions Cost efficiency; it does not by itself establish profit
Opt-outs and complaints Requests and issues recorded after the campaign Signals to review relevance, expectations and frequency

For example, 74 unique tracked clickers from 1,850 delivered messages gives a 4% click-through rate under that definition. Those are illustrative numbers, not a benchmark or DianaHost campaign result. Review invalid or automated link activity where your measurement tool identifies it.

Run a small, controlled A/B test

Split a suitable opted-in audience into comparable, non-overlapping groups. Change one thing, such as the opening benefit or the call to action, while keeping the offer, permitted language, landing page and other conditions consistent. Decide the success metric before sending.

A few extra clicks in a small sample do not prove a reliable winner. Compare orders, cost and opt-outs as well as clicks, and repeat promising findings. Keep the approved copy, audience definition, sending time, segment count and results as a reusable template record. Recheck dates, stock and permissions before reusing it.

Three sample messages to adapt

The following Bangla examples use a fictional business, নবপথ, and illustrative dates, offers and shop.example URLs. They are not live offers or approved templates. Replace every detail, implement a working opt-out, confirm required approvals and count the final segments before use.

A specific seasonal offer

নবপথ: শীতের পোশাকে ১০% ছাড়, ২০ নভেম্বর পর্যন্ত। দেখুন: shop.example/winter বন্ধ: shop.example/stop

The product category, benefit and deadline are visible immediately. Add any material eligibility condition; do not hide it to save space.

An Eid delivery cut-off reminder

নবপথ: ঈদের আগে ডেলিভারির শেষ অর্ডার ১৮ মার্চ, বিকেল ৪টা। বিস্তারিত: shop.example/eid বন্ধ: shop.example/stop

Use the real courier cut-off for the customer’s area. This is a campaign reminder, not a substitute for a customer’s individual order-status update.

A Pohela Boishakh collection announcement

নবপথ: নতুন বৈশাখী সংগ্রহ এসেছে। পছন্দের পোশাক দেখুন: shop.example/boishakh বন্ধ: shop.example/stop

The message gives one clear browsing action. A discount is optional; useful news can be enough when the customer asked to hear about that collection.

A pre-send checklist for your next campaign

  1. Audience: permission records checked, duplicates removed, opt-outs excluded and groups appropriate.
  2. Offer: stock, eligibility, prices, deadline and landing page agree.
  3. Sender and rules: sender identity, content approval, language, route coverage and permitted hours confirmed.
  4. Copy: all variables expanded, spelling reviewed, opt-out usable and final segment count checked.
  5. Test: sample delivery, Bangla rendering, links and opt-out tested on representative phones and intended networks.
  6. Budget: recipient count, estimated segments, applicable rates and other charges reviewed.
  7. Schedule: Bangladesh timezone, expiry and any scheduled job verified.
  8. Measurement: campaign identifier, action metric and review window recorded.

Common mistakes are sending to an unverified list, repeating the same promotion, using vague offers, overlooking multipart costs and leaving approvals until launch day. Another is treating a high delivery count as proof that the campaign worked. Review what customers actually did before increasing the volume.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time for SMS marketing in Bangladesh?

First confirm the promotional sending hours permitted for your route. Then test a relevant time within that window using Bangladesh local time. The best choice depends on the customer’s routine and the action you need them to take.

Do promotional SMS messages need approval?

Sender registration and content review requirements depend on the service and route. Confirm the process, lead time and whether text changes need a fresh review before scheduling a campaign.

Should I use Bangla or English for promotional SMS?

Confirm applicable language rules first. BTRC’s published guidance addresses Bangla promotional messages from operators. Where a choice is allowed, prioritize audience understanding and count the final message’s encoding units.

How often should I send offers?

Follow the expectations set when customers subscribed and send for a relevant reason. Monitor opt-outs and complaints, coordinate overlapping campaigns and avoid repeating the same offer to someone who already acted.

Can customers reply STOP to a masking SMS?

Do not assume they can. Alphanumeric masking senders are generally one-way. Use a confirmed reply-capable route or provide another tested way to stop promotions, then apply the request to future campaigns.

Can I upload an Excel or CSV customer list?

Confirm your platform’s supported import format and limits with DianaHost. Preserve phone numbers as text, check field mappings, remove duplicates and exclude opted-out contacts before importing.

Can I measure the open rate of an ordinary SMS campaign?

Standard SMS does not supply read receipts. Use delivery reports, properly defined link metrics, coupon use, bookings and orders. Treat any claimed open-rate figure according to how it was actually measured.

How much will a campaign cost?

It depends on recipients, message segments, sender/service type, the applicable rate and other charges. Get a current quote and count personalized messages after all fields and links are inserted.
